PROPOSAL TEXT: WWW.
• I am interested in social structures, especially those noticable on the internet. The social etiquette hasn’t formed itself yet on the internet since the medium is quite new, it’s a process that is taking place at this very moment. Since the internet has added an extra bonus to interacting with each other, being able to share anything and everything with anyone and even the possibility of becoming famous while you’re able to stay completely anonymous, I believe the medium has become very popular. This process of sharing information and doing things for each other, while you don’t know the person on the other side of the world, intrigues me. You don’t need to know someone to help them out.
• At the moment, there is a new generation growing up, a generation that doesn’t know what it’s like to live your life without the internet. I believe this generation will be very important for the etiquette that hasn’t been formed yet, and that these adolescents (at the age of 18 and younger) in the end will define what we will think is normal or not on the World Wide Web. Until that point, I believe, you can define the social structures of the internet as completely chaotic. We are at the base of a paradigm shift, which is extremely interesting.
• I’m also questioning our privacy, what should we share and what shouldn’t we? How far will people go for someone they don’t know, and why would they actually help someone they really don’t know at all? How big is the role of naivety and unawareness in this process, and is goodwill always a good thing? Does age difference matter in the way we use the internet and respond to it, and does it matter if the person offering to help you stays completely anonymous?
• Questions I try to answer making my work. The last year I’ve started several internet-based projects, basically asking people to do something for me, varying from making a stuffed animal for me, to sending me samples of their daily medication or tell me their deepest secrets. I want to explore what motivates those who helped me, why they helped me and if they did it for themselves, just to feel good about themselves, or that they really cared about me or my work.
I believe most people want to matter and to feel good about themselves by helping out other people. But how far will they go, and what consequences does this have? I believe people are very unaware of their behavior on internet and social media. This subject I’d like to explore during the MA course, because I believe this environment is very suitable for this subject. The media I’ll mostly use to realize my work will be sculpture, installation and video.
